First, an incision is made at the front of the hip joint. This allows the surgeon to gently move muscles and other soft tissue aside rather than cutting them to access the hip joint. Next, the damaged femur ball is removed and replaced with an artificial ball implant.

Then, the hip socket is prepared for the artificial socket implant, and the implant is pressed into place. A plastic liner is then inserted into the artificial socket to provide a low-friction surface between the socket and femur implants. Finally, the ball implant is placed in the artificial socket and the incision is closed.

Thanks to the minimally invasive techniques used, anterior hip replacement surgeries often don’t take as long as other hip surgery options. The entire procedure often takes about two to three hours to complete. Also, it may take approximately two hours for you to recover completely from the anesthetic used during the procedure.
