Hip replacement surgery is often used to help patients with hip arthritis. According to an article published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, more than 300,000 hip replacements are done every year. There are several types of hip replacement surgeries that can be used to treat hip arthritis, and one of the best types is anterior total hip replacement surgery.

WHAT IS ANTERIOR TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY?

Anterior hip replacement is a procedure that has only become popular in the last few years. There are several basic steps involved in this form of surgery. First, the surgeon makes an incision at the front of your hip, and the muscles and other soft tissue are gently moved aside. This allows direct access to the hip joint.

Next, the ball at the end of the femur, or thigh bone, is removed from the hip socket, and the damaged ball is cut off. An artificial implant is then placed into the thigh bone and cemented in place. After the femur implant is in place, the surgeon will prepare the hip socket for the artificial socket implant and put this implant in place. The artificial ball and socket implants will then be joined together with a plastic spacer in between. Finally, the incision will be closed and bandaged.

HOW DOES ANTERIOR TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY BENEFIT THE PATIENT?

One reason to consider having an anterior hip replacement is it’s designed to offer benefits that other hip replacements don’t. For one thing, making the incision at the front of the hip allows surgeons to minimize soft tissue damage. As a result, the joint may be better supported and more stable following surgery.

Less soft tissue damage also means that your body may take less time to recover after surgery, and you may lose less blood while in surgery with the anterior approach. Also, this approach is intended to reduce the risk of post-surgical joint dislocation, and it may decrease the risk of post-surgical infection.
