First, the surgeon makes an incision at the front of your hip, and the muscles and other soft tissue are gently moved aside. This allows direct access to the hip joint.

Next, the ball at the end of the femur, or thigh bone, is removed from the hip socket, and the damaged ball is cut off. An artificial implant is then placed into the thigh bone and cemented in place. After the femur implant is in place, the surgeon will prepare the hip socket for the artificial socket implant and put this implant in place. The artificial ball and socket implants will then be joined together with a plastic spacer in between. Finally, the incision will be closed and bandaged.
